Leroy Sané missed the final training session before the German national team’s World Cup opener against Japan with knee problems. It is still unclear whether these are of a serious nature or whether he will be able to return shortly. The failure “is bitter because he is a difference player,” said national coach Hansi Flick at the press conference. He has the quality of being able to “shoot a game alone”.
According to reports from sports1 should Kai Havertz, actually intended as a center forward, move to the wing for Sané. That would mean that the indirect replacement will find themselves in the nines position. Here Niclas Füllkrug and Thomas Müller are candidates for a starting eleven. Thomas Müller in particular “is really an option. He did it very well in training today,” said Flick.
DFB team, News: Jamal Musiala wants to win the Ballon d’Or
Expectations are high – at just 19, Jamal Musiala is the German national team’s hope for the World Cup. But he doesn’t feel any pressure, he revealed in an interview with the sports picture.
“The expectations don’t make me nervous,” he explained in an interview. The clear goal is “to win the World Cup”. In order to play as freely as possible, he imposed a social media ban on himself for the day before a competitive game. “I just want to concentrate on my sport,” he explained.
But the FC Bayern youngster also has a lot of personal plans. “I would like to have my name on the Ballon d’Or plaque,” Musiala dreamed. But for that he has to improve and work on himself. But “that’s my dream,” said the dribbler. However, the title with the team is more important to him. “We want to be world champions with Germany. Anything that would come after that would be a nice addition,” he explained when asked about the Ballon d’Or chances if he won the title.
DFB-Team, News: Nico Schlotterbeck’s performance “can be improved so far”
Nico Schlotterbeck sees a certain discrepancy between his ideas for Borussia Dortmund and in the DFB selection. “I think my performances in the club are very good, but there was room for improvement with the national team so far. The international matches were not yet at the level that I expect from myself and the national coach too,” said the 22-year-old in the sports1-Interview.
Schlotterbeck has caused three penalties in his six international matches so far. “Hansi has talked to me a lot these days and addressed the adjustments we want to make,” he reported, “that certainly includes the penalties”.
As a defender you often walk a “fine line”, explained Schlotterbeck, mistakes are sometimes almost inevitable. “I reflect a lot after bad games,” he emphasized, “you can assume that”.
DFB, News: Marc-Andre ter Stegen shows no understanding for sporting sanctions
National goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has criticized the world association FIFA for handling the “One Love” bandage. “It cannot be that a team or a captain is sportingly punished because he wears this bandage,” said the 30-year-old to the news portal t-online. The ban is not only a “big issue” in the countries concerned, but also within the team.
Ter Stegen also gets some of the critical reporting about the World Cup. “We also know about the difficult situation in Qatar, what sometimes bad things happen to people here,” said the goalkeeper from FC Barcelona: “We want to convey completely different values. A lot of things strike us negatively.” Nevertheless, shortly before the games you have to concentrate on the sporting side.
DFB team, news: Leon Goretzka sees competition as invigorating
Leon Goretzka sees the fierce competition in the midfield of the German national team as invigorating. “It makes me confident that we have top players in our ranks who can play different positions. We are all challenged to make it as difficult as possible for Hansi Flick to not consider just one of us in the starting XI,” said the Bayern professional Munich evening newspaper.
The DFB selection has “respect, but not fear” for the opening opponent Japan. A successful start against the four-time Asian champions could give wings, like winning the titles in 1990 and 2014, said the 27-year-old, “we want to build on that”.
Goretzka sees a “good spirit that arouses anticipation for the games and exudes confidence and self-confidence” in the team.
DFB team, News: Serge Gnabry: “I have a lot of faith in us”
Serge Gnabry sees good chances for the German national team at the World Cup in Qatar. “I have a lot of confidence in us,” said the Bayern Munich professional before the World Cup opener against Japan DAZN: “The potential in our team is exceptional.”
The key to the title is team spirit, emphasized the 27-year-old. “It will be important that this bond grows during the tournament. There are many nations with a lot of good players. But that can make the difference,” he explained.
“You expect top performances from myself and from each individual and that we give everything,” Gnabry continued: “If that’s the case, we will hopefully be very successful.”
DFB team, news: only one German in Lothar Matthäus’ top eleven
Ex-national player Lothar Matthäus published in the sports picture his “Unbeatable XI” for the World Cup. Explosive: Only a German makes it into the top 11 of legend Matthäus. Joshua Kimmich would compete with him as a six. After all, Alphonso Davies is also the left-back from the Bundesliga.
Matthäus does without Manuel Neuer in goal and takes Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois with him instead. Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands), Cristian Romero (Argentina) and Achraf Hakimi (Morocco) were preferred in defence. Instead of Leon Goretzka or Ilkay Gündogan, the former six relies on Kevin de Bruyne (Belgium) alongside Kimmich.
Not even Jamal Musiala makes it into the “Unbeatable XI”! In the tenth position he has to admit defeat to Lionel Messi (Argentina). As left wing he sees Vinicius Junior (Brazil) ahead of Musiala. On the right he prefers the versatile Kylian Mbappé (France). And in the storm peak? Of course there is Robert Lewandowski (Poland).
