Sandman is definitely one of the most anticipated releases on Netflix in 2022. Forbidden for minors, the series promises to shake up the platform’s catalog with captivating characters, great plot twists and explicit scenes of sex and violence.
The Sandman plot mixes drama, fantasy, horror and suspense. The series is based on the comic of the same name, written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC between 1989 and 1996. The comic book, in fact, is seen as one of the most iconic of all time.
Neil Gaiman, in addition to creating the original Sandman story, also serves as an executive producer for the Netflix series. David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman) serve as showrunners.

Discover the daring story of the Sandman on Netflix
Sandman focuses on the story of the protagonist Dream – a powerful mystical entity who is also known as Morpheus, King of Dreams and, as its title implies, Sandman.
The protagonist is one of the Endless Seven, immortal beings who dominate some of the most important aspects of human existence. In addition to Dream, the group is formed by Fate, Death, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium.
The plot begins with the capture of Dream by the Order of Ancient Mysteries – and culminates with the escape of the Endless and his battle to restore the Kingdom of Dreams.
“After years of imprisonment, Morpheus, the King of Dreams, embarks on a journey between worlds to recover what was stolen from him and restore his power,” reads the official synopsis for Sandman on Netflix.
Sandman is for ages 18+
Recently, Netflix confirmed that the Sandman adaptation, like the original comic, will be aimed at adults only.
In other words, the series will have an indicative rating “for over 18 years old”. In the United States, the production received the TV-MA label (recommended for adults and prohibited for children under 17).
Sandman earned that rating for inappropriate language and heavy scenes of violence and sex. Additionally, Season 1 will have references to suicide, self-harm, and smoking.
The Sandman Cast Has Cruella And Game Of Thrones Stars
One of Sandman’s greatest strengths is its impressive all-star cast, which includes famous film and TV actors.
Tom Sturridge, from films like Mary Shelley and Velvet Buzzsaw, leads the cast of Sandman as Dream.
The other Endless – Death, Desire and Despair – are played, respectively, by Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Cruella), Mason Alexander Park (Cowboy Bebop) and Donna Preston (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
It remains to be seen whether Fate, Destruction and Delirium will appear in Sandman season 1.
Gwendoline Christie, famous for playing the warrior Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, is Lucifer Morningstar, the ruler of Hell.
Boyd Holbrook, from series like Narcos and The Fugitive, is Corinthian, a nightmare that escapes from the Kingdom of Dreams.
Charles Dance, Game of Thrones’ Tywin Lannister, plays Sir. Roderick Burgess, a quack occultist.
Asim Chaudhry (Wonder Woman: 1984) and Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Indian Doctor) play the biblical characters Abel and Cain.
Jenna Coleman (Victoria) rounds out the main cast of Sandman as Johanna Constantine, an intrepid paranormal detective.
The Sandman cast also includes Joely Richardson (The Tudors), David Thewlis (Fargo), Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta), Razane Jammal (Paranormal), Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille) and Mark Hammil (Star Wars).
