Warner Wants to Turn The Lord of the Rings into a Star Wars-Inspired Franchise

The newly announced Lord of the Rings movies could be the start of a huge new franchise. According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. intends to turn The Lord of the Rings into a Star Wars-like franchise.

The studio, however, will face some challenges ahead. With Warner Bros. securing the rights to develop more films while Amazon Studios has the rights to develop The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series, these two lands should not overlap.

In other words, movies and TV series shouldn’t share the same universe of characters in the way that Star Wars and the MCU manage to do.

There’s still no word on which characters and events the new Lord of the Rings films will adapt, but in a recent statement Warner co-presidents Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy indicated they are not interested in remaking the Peter Jackson films. Everything indicates, therefore, that the new films should address unexplored corners of Middle Earth.

new movies

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros Pictures have entered into a multi-million dollar deal with the Embracer Group to produce new Lord of the Rings films.

The deal comes 20 years after New Line released director Peter Jackson’s epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, including just 11 for the saga finale, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

New Line and Warner Bros Animation are currently producing The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, an original anime set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings. The film, which tells the fate of the legendary King of Rohan’s House of Helm Hammerhand, is scheduled to open in theaters on April 12, 2024.

In addition to the new films and anime, the saga also features a TV series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, in charge of Prime Video, which has committed to producing at least five seasons.
