Jan Vertonghen considers it an enormous honor every time to play for the national team of Belgium. The former Ajax player has already played 142 international matches and is now on the eve of his third World Cup. “I was already very proud that I was allowed to play one international match for the Red Devils,” quoted The Telegraph the Belgian during a press moment.
Playing for Belgium means a lot to Vertonghen, he explains. “I also try to make it clear to the young boys that it is great for me every time to play for my country. I hope to inspire guests with this as well. That was also partly successful. I think there is much more pride in playing for the national team than when I first started.’
A player like Axel Witsel, who is two years younger than Vertonghen, has 127 international matches and could therefore still catch up with the former Ajax player. “I don’t know if there is competition between them,” says the Belgian. “I think everyone wants to play for the national team as much as possible. The number of international matches is not the most important, but the highest possible achievement with the team. Hopefully that will sort into a trophy for the Devils one day.’
Chances for Belgium at the World Cup in Qatar
With Belgium, Vertonghen hopes for success this World Cup. Where the Belgian team has often been seen as one of the favorites in recent years, confidence in the team now seems to be less. “I can understand it somehow,” says Vertonghen. “Our selection in 2018 was exceptional. Everyone was at a special level, both at Belgium and at his club. It is understandable that some doubts have now arisen. Partly because of the results of the last period and also a number of leading forces from that time have stopped.’
Nevertheless, Vertonghen is also positive about the World Cup chances of our southern neighbors. ‘I do see a lot of potential in young boys who are making strides. There was a time when there was little youth, but I really like what I see now. Maybe we need to tweak some things and be a little more realistic in our game. But then I think we don’t have to be inferior to the team from then.’
