Venus Williams returns to victory a year and a half after her last success

WTA AucklandAmerican Venus Williams, recipient of an invitation, won her first match on the circuit for a year and a half by beating compatriot Katie Volynets (WTA 113) in the first round of the WTA 250 tennis tournament in Auckland, event on hard court endowed with $259,303 on Monday in New Zealand.

The last success of the eldest of the Williams sisters, 42, dates back to June 29, 2021 against the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu in the 1st round at Wimbledon. The American had then played – and therefore lost – only six singles matches since then, including four in 2022, the last of which was against Alison Van Uytvanck at the US Open. Former world N.1, she now occupies the 1,003 place in the WTA ranking.

Venus Williams is preparing for the Australian Open, where she also received a ‘wildcard’. She will face in the round of 16 in Auckland the Chinese Zhu Lin (WTA 84), victorious 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 over the American Madison Brengle (WTA 57).

Venus Williams has won 49 titles in her career, including five Wimbledon titles and the US Open twice.
