Bert van Marwijk thinks that Ajax midfielder Davy Klaassen may be the key to the success of the Orange. The former national coach, who managed to reach the 2010 World Cup final with the Dutch national team, said this in an interview with Football International.
In that interview, Van Marwijk was asked what, in his opinion, could be the key to success. After an introductory story, he arrives at the answer: Davy Klaassen. ‘The triangle of the two strikers with the “number 10” is very important’, Van Marwijk begins his story. “If Depay is going to play, you have to look at who fits best. Gini Wijnaldum clicked very well with Depay. You have to be lucky with that, but they feel each other. I think that Steven Bergwijn has something more from the side that also with Depay. Then you have to look for a good number 10. A runner coming over. Klaassen could do that.’
Van Gaal chose Cody Gakpo as ‘number 10’ in the opening game with Senegal, while he brought in Klaassen as a substitute. Van Marwijk understands Van Gaal’s view. ‘Gakpo is a player who can play deep, I wonder if he often does that without the ball. I prefer to see him from the left and on the ball. But sometimes it happens that something doesn’t fit, while it is potentially one of your best players.’
“Klaassen a footballer who can play very well without often hitting the ball”
Gakpo is called a good player on the ball, although more is needed, Van Marwijk explains. ‘Klaassen is a football player who can play very well without hitting the ball often. If Berghuis can give the balls to the deep people in the front from the middle, I think you have something that fits well together. I think Louis is looking for good combinations.’
