Van Leeuwen looks back on Ziyech’s transfer: ‘We spent all day in Apeldoorn’

Ted van Leeuwen has looked back on the transfer from Hakim Ziyech to Ajax. Van Leeuwen was technical director at FC Twente at the time and calls it a special transfer. This was partly due to the positions of Ajax and FC Twente.

At that time, FC Twente had drawn up a financial rescue plan. According to Van Leeuwen, that was based on Ziyech. “It was based on the value of Hakim Ziyech. If I didn’t reach that net amount, we wouldn’t be allowed to sell Ziyech,” says Van Leeuwen in the The Cor Potcast.

Then Ajax knocked on the door of FC Twente. ‘Ajax had told themselves that they should never spend that much on domestic transfers again. That had gone badly wrong a few times’, says the former technical director of FC Twente. ‘It took us all day in Apeldoorn.’ Van Leeuwen spoke on behalf of FC Twente with Marc Overmars and Jeroen Slop. Eventually the clubs came together.

‘Ultimately everything becomes liquid under pressure’

According to him, it is especially important that everything just fits and that happened. ‘Ajax had just lost 4-1 in Rostov the week before. The window threatened to die, Ziyech had already played four games’, says Van Leeuwen, who also says that there was a lot of interest in Ziyech. ‘You don’t want to know how many agents and clubs I’ve had over the floor for him. I’ve even been threatened for it, but that’s a story in itself. Eventually everything becomes liquid under pressure. We got out at the end of the day.’
