Van Gaal uses Timber to fight Ecuador: ‘He is more suitable for that’

Louis van Gaal explained on Friday about the basic places for Jurriën Timber and Davy Klaassen and the reserve role for Steven Berghuis. The national coach talks to the NOS frequently in the specific way in which Orange against Ecuador want to play.

First of all, the head coach talks about choosing Timber over Matthijs de Ligt. “It has to do with the qualities of the opponent,” says Van Gaal. “I expected Ibarra to play and Timber was more suited to that. But he is also suitable to play against Valencia, who will participate. He’s the better figure for that.’

Teun Koopmeiners will play in midfield, next to Frenkie de Jong. It means that Berghuis takes a seat on the couch. Yet the two midfielders are very close to each other. ‘Berghuis or Koopmeiners was already a question mark for me before the World Cup. I saw Berghuis at the World Cup and now I want to give Koopmeiners that chance.’

In the match against Senegal, the Dutch national team was not careful enough with possession. However, Van Gaal emphasizes that it was not Berghuis’s fault. ‘Of course that is an argument, but that was not only the case with Berghuis. The entire Dutch national team was guilty of this. It has to do with midfield. We think Koopmeiners can play better against Caicedo.’

‘Klaassen is a rock at that’

Finally, Van Gaal talks about the implementation of the vanguard and ten position. Klaassen plays behind the strikers, while Cody Gakpo moves from midfield to the attack. “It also has to do with the opponent, with how we are going to secure it,” the trainer explains. ‘Klaassen is actually an expert at that.’
