Van Gaal explains back numbers: ‘Players have back numbers that match their age’

At the first press conference in Qatar, Louis van Gaal responded to the back numbers with which the Orange internationals will play at the World Cup. These back numbers were announced earlier this week. The national coach says that this has not been discussed with him.

For example, Remko Pasveer wears shirt number 1. Immediately there was speculation that the Ajax goalkeeper would be preferred to Feyenoord keeper Justin Bijlow and Heerenveen keeper Andries Noppert. However, Van Gaal denies this rumour. “In general I discuss that with the players, not now.”

The national coach says that the back numbers are based on something else. “I gave the players a number that fits their age,” Van Gaal said. Then the national coach says that he is not joking. “I never tell jokes at a press conference, I explain how I did it.” It is therefore not true that the 39-year-old Pasveer would be the first keeper with his shirt number. “That has to do with age, that’s why I give that answer,” said Van Gaal.

Other back numbers of Ajax players

Pasveer is number 22 under the bar at Ajax, so the goalkeeper has a different back number with the national team. Daley Blind, on the other hand, sticks to shirt number 17, with which he also plays at Ajax. Jurriën Timber and Steven Bergwijn also wear the same back number. Kenneth Taylor, Davy Klaassen and Steven Berghuis, just like Pasveer, have a different back number with the Orange compared to Ajax.
