TV star denies assault
Bill Cosby wants to appeal

Bill Cosby is said to have sexually abused a 16-year-old girl more than 45 years ago in the famous Playboy Mansion. A court sentenced him to $500,000 in damages. Cosby’s spokesman then makes it clear: The plaintiff will never see the money.

Former US television star Bill Cosby wants to appeal after his conviction for the equivalent of 475,000 euros in damages for allegations of abuse. This was announced by Cosby’s spokesman, Andrew Wyatt, according to a report in Variety magazine. Plaintiff Judy Huth will “never” receive any money from the 84-year-old former actor. Wyatt also described the verdict in a civil lawsuit from the previous day as an “amazing victory” for Cosby.

Although the Santa Monica, Calif., jury awarded the plaintiff $500,000 in damages, they would not have ordered Cosby to pay additional punitive damages. This could have been “more than ten million dollars,” said the spokesman. In civil lawsuits in the United States, defendants are often awarded punitive damages in excess of actual damages, intended as a punishment and deterrent. Cosby was found guilty on Tuesday of sexually abusing 16-year-old Huth in 1975.

According to Huth, the attack took place in the famous Playboy Mansion, the villa of “Playboy” founder Hugh Hefner in Los Angeles. The actor, who became world famous with the sitcom “The Bill Cosby Show”, who stayed away from the two-week trial, denies any assault. It is his first conviction in a civil trial. More than 60 women have accused Cosby of sexual abuse, but most cases are statute-barred.

In a 2018 trial in the state of Pennsylvania, the former acting star was found guilty of sexually abusing a woman in 2004. Cosby was sentenced to several years in prison. However, he was released from custody in June 2021 after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned the verdict on formal grounds. The actor was revered in the US as “America’s Dad” for decades. As the amiable doctor and good-natured father of a family on The Bill Cosby Show, he was one of the country’s most popular TV stars before becoming an outlaw over allegations of sexual abuse.
