Tomb Raider 2: Studio loses rights – No sequel with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft

Only recently “Tomb Raider 2” really picked up speed, but too late: MGM lost the film rights. Nevertheless, there is hope for more Lara Croft films.

In Tomb Raider, Lara Croft’s third screen adventure, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander took over the baton from Angelina Jolie for the first time in 2018 and filled her footsteps with bravura. Many fans were therefore happy that Vikander was always interested in a sequel. Since that Box office of a good 275 million euros but fell slightly short of the expectations of the responsible studio, the sequel was on the brink for almost a year and a half. After more behind-the-scenes complications, Metro-Goldwin-Mayer has now missed an important deadline and thus lost the film rights. A new studio could now take over.

Tomb Raider 2: Sequel on Ice

In the fall of 2019, the happy news came that the sequel was greenlit (via deadline). The film even got a theatrical release for spring 2021, but as is well known, nothing came of it. A little later there was also a change of leadership behind the scenes, which gave the project new hope: Director Ben Wheatley and author Amy Jump were replaced by “Lovecraft Country” showrunner Misha Green.

However, filming should have started by early May 2022 – that was the condition to which the film rights of the video game series were bound. Since this schedule could not be met, the sequel is canceled (via ComicBookyou can get more information about this in this article).

Is another studio taking over the Tomb Raider series?

Nonetheless, we could expect more Tomb Raider movies in the future. Maybe not necessarily in the cinema, but on one of the big streaming platforms, because Amazon, Netflix and Co. are now vying for the rights. However, a sequel to the 2018 film is not to be expected, instead it will probably be a new start. Netflix may currently have the best chance of taking over at this point, after all, the streaming service is already working on an animated “Tomb Raider” series.

“Tomb Raider 2”: Reboot instead of sequel

According to the latest events, little can be said about the plot and only speculated. At the end of Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider, Lara made the shocking discovery that the ruthless secret organization Trinity is part of Croft Holdings and operates around the world under the leadership of her father’s former business partner. This is where the sequel could have picked up and sent Lara on a new adventure to smash the organization and put an end to their machinations.

From the looks of it, that won’t happen again. It remains to be seen how close or far another “Tomb Raider” film will be to the video game template, for which a new part is currently said to be in the works. Of course we will keep you up to date on all the news at this point.
