Today on TV: Sci-Fi action film, which was completely lost in the cinema

There are films that roll over the cinemas like a wave. And there are films that go under without a sound. You can see one of these representatives again on TV on Saturday.

With the filming of Young Adult books, Hollywood discovered a niche in the market, which made the box office ring with the “Twilight” templates or the “Hunger Games” books. Thanks to several sequels and a real hype about the fan favorites, producers and studios have enjoyed the exciting stories for years – and millions in revenue. But not every adaptation of a novel for the young target group is crowned with success. Director J Blakeson (“I Care a Lot”) made a big mistake with his vision of the young adult book “The 5th Wave” and went under at the cinema release in January 2016. Today, on 19. November 2022 at 8:15 p.m. VOX shows the sci-fi flick again on free TV for everyone who missed the film starring Chloë Grace Moretz (“Periphery”) and Nick Robinson (“Love, Simon”).

Millions of dollars in budget, but no viewers in the audience: “The 5th Wave” is not the only production that failed at the box office. We have put together more examples in our video for you.

What is The 5th Wave about?

Everything started like an ordinary day. But for young Cassie (Moretz), this day will mark the beginning of the end of the earth. An alien invasion of the planet has begun, which in various phases is wiping out humanity more and more. No electricity, natural disasters, plagues, and the takeover of human bodies were just the beginning. But the fifth wave is yet to come. To fight back against the alien enemies, Cassie reluctantly joins the inscrutable Commander Vosch (Liev Schreiber), who trains youngsters to become fighters. Finding her brother Sammy (Zackary Arthur), who has disappeared in the doomsday chaos, is more important to Cassie. Survive or save her brother? Cassie has little time until the next invasion phase.

Are you planning a sequel to The 5th Wave?

Although “The 5th Wave” with an open ending was obviously designed for another part, there will be no sequel. With a gross of $110 million on a production budget of $88 million, the chances of part 2 appearing slim. Since 2016, there has been no further information from the producing studio Sony about new plans to give the franchise a second chance. Thus, the cliffhanger leaves a bland aftertaste that you should simply convince yourself of.
