Timber: “If we become world champions, I believe God plays a major role in that”

Jurriën Timber has indicated that he gets a lot of strength from his faith. The defender travels to Qatar on Tuesday for the World Cup and takes his bible with him. In conversation with The Telegraph tells the Ajax player about his faith and why it gives him strength.

Timber is known as a defender who can keep the peace like no other. “People ask how I stay so calm in the field under all circumstances. That’s partly because of the person I am. And partly because of the faith and strength and confidence that I draw from it.’ The Ajax player then tells that his faith calms him down. ‘Thanks to God, I just don’t experience that much stress under pressure. He also provides peace of mind in difficult moments.’

‘I try to go to church at least once a week, the Best Life Church in Zuilen. When I come out of church, I always have new energy.” However, this does not always work. ‘In the middle of the season – with two games a week – that’s difficult. Recently we played Excelsior on a Sunday evening at 8pm and then I was sitting in church in the morning hours. If I can, I’ll take him with me. If it doesn’t work, my mother will forward the sermon’, Timber says.

World Cup in Qatar

In Qatar, Timber will have little time to visit the church. That is why the international will use his bible. ‘I try to take a moment for faith every morning and evening. I pray when I get up and go to sleep. I thank God for what is to come and for the day that has passed,” continues the talented defender. At the Orange squad, Timber talks a lot with PSV striker Cody Gakpo. “I often talk to Cody about God. He is also very religious. Lately he has been sending me Bible verses and we plan to go to church together soon. We are good with each other and faith triggers us to get to know each other even better.’

The Netherlands will have to pull out all the stops if it wants to leave Qatar as world champion, but it is not impossible. Timber therefore says that he is not going to Qatar for a holiday. “If we become world champions, I believe God plays a big role in that. One hundred percent. The chance is there. We’ll see,” said Timber.
