The Walking Dead series has come to an end after 11 seasons, but the story continues with spin-off series, which are already in production. This outcome brought two highly commented guest appearances, but many did not notice other important characters returning.
The finale, titled “Rest in Peace,” includes two major returns: Andrew Lincoln reprises the role of Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira returns as Michonne.
That’s in part to set up the planned spin-off about the two, which doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
But it also wraps up everything that came before, bringing back two of the franchise’s most recognizable heroes at the last hour for a bit of emotional catharsis.
Other returns at the end of The Walking Dead
Still, in a wide-ranging interview with EW, executive producer Scott M. Gimple shed light on several other cameos from The Walking Dead finale included in the episode.
“Rest in Peace” features a montage of the protagonists repeating the phrase “we are the ones who live”, which is essential to the history of the franchise.
This includes the voices of former The Walking Dead actors Lennie James (Morgan), Laurie Holden (Andrea), Chandler Riggs (Carl), Michael Cudlitz (Abraham), Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha) and Steven Yeun (Glenn).
Gimple had plans to go further, even showing the characters.
“At the speed we were moving, it didn’t look like we could visually do it in an amazing way. This was very tightly scheduled and we would have had to schedule multiple shoots across the country to do it.”
