The Walking Dead: Explained Why Rick’s Movies Were Canceled

When the American broadcaster AMC announced the production of The Walking Dead films – focused on the story of Rick Grimes – the internet went into an uproar. However, after years of waiting, the trilogy was cancelled. That’s why viewers want to know: why are Rick Grimes’ movies no longer happening?

Rick Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, left The Walking Dead at the end of season 9. Originally, the protagonist was going to return in a film trilogy.

However, The Walking Dead showrunner has decided to swap those three films for yet another TV series, which is expected to premiere in mid-2023.

But after all, what was the reason for the change? Here’s everything you need to know about The Walking Dead producers’ decision.

Why did The Walking Dead cancel the Rick Grimes movies?

During Comic-Con 2022, Scott M. Gimple – head of content for The Walking Dead – confirmed AMC’s decision to swap the Rick Grimes movies for a TV series.

The Rick Grimes trilogy was announced in 2018, shortly after Andrew Lincoln’s departure from the original series.

Damaged by the Covid-19 pandemic, filming was supposed to start in 2020. This year, they were officially cancelled.

In place of the Rick Grimes films, AMC will release a miniseries starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira, Michonne.

“We are producing a series for AMC+, with 6 episodes. It’s an epic love story, that’s all I can say,” commented Scott Gimple.

Both Rick and Michonne “disappeared” from The Walking Dead. The characters left the series in seasons 9 and 10.

Rick was last seen on a helicopter from CRM – the mysterious organization that also appears in the World Beyond series.

The following season, Michonne leaves Judith with Daryl and embarks on a journey to find her lost partner.

In this way, Rick and Michonne’s reunion should become one of the most romantic moments in The Walking Dead’s history.

The president of entertainment for AMC Studios and AMC Networks also spoke about the new series at Comic-Con.

“We couldn’t be more excited to see the finale of this epic series (The Walking Dead), and to see Andrew and Danai return in a new story they helped create,” commented Dan McDermott.

Currently, The Walking Dead already has two spin-off series: Fear the Walking Dead and World Beyond.

Going forward, AMC will release the anthology Tales of the Walking Dead, a series focused on Daryl and a spinoff about Maggie and Negan.
