The UN is concerned and warns: North Korea is preparing its first nuclear test since 2017

Construction work on an underground test facility in the north of the country has been seen in recent months: “Work at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site paves the way for additional nuclear testing for the development of ‘nuclear weapons,’ says a confidential UN report, some excerpts of which were seen by the German news agency DPA.

Satellite images of the site suggest North Korea repaired its network of tunnels and rebuilt structures demolished in 2018 as part of negotiations with the United States.

According to the UN report, which covers activity in recent months, fissile material production capacity has also been increased at the country’s nuclear facility in Yongbyon.
