The Umbrella Academy: Meet Elliot Page’s New Character

The 3rd season of The Umbrella Academy, new to the Brazilian catalog of Netflix, brings major changes to the plot and its characters. The new episodes also feature one of the most important performances of Elliot Page’s career. In the superhero series, the actor plays a character that is both new and familiar.

“After preventing the end of the world in 1963, the Umbrella Academy returns to the present, but the celebration is short-lived: soon, the heroes realize that things are not quite as they left them. In fact, it’s all completely different. That’s where the Sparrows come in,” states the new year’s synopsis.

The Umbrella Academy is, without a doubt, one of the most popular productions on Netflix. The series is based on the eponymous comic book, produced by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, winner of the Eisner award.

We explain below everything you need to know about Viktor, Elliot Page’s new character in Stranger Things season 3.

Who is Viktor, Elliot Page’s character in The Umbrella Academy?

Since its first season, The Umbrella Academy has established itself as an inherently queer. And that’s not just due to characters like Number 4.

Most characters in the series, regardless of their identity, are constantly rejected and oppressed by an intolerant society.

In other words: the experiences of the heroes of The Umbrella Academy reflect the trajectory of the LGBTQIA+ community in real life.

Since The Umbrella Academy’s focus is on the traumas of the main characters, it would be easy to believe that Elliot Page’s gender transition would be related to painful experiences.

But luckily, that doesn’t happen in season 3. On the contrary, the new episodes embody Elliot Page’s gender identity in a fluid and natural way, without using some of the biggest clichés of LGBTQIA+ plots.

Viktor, long before assuming his gender identity, was always uncomfortable in his own body. So when the character decides to change his look in the second episode of season 3, the change doesn’t feel “forced” or “meaningless”.

Another Netflix hit involves the reaction of Viktor’s brothers to the character’s transition. None of them see their brother with prejudice or intolerance. On the contrary, everyone accepts change with open arms.

“I always hated mirrors. I thought everyone always felt so weird in their skin. I don’t think that’s true, right?”, asks Viktor in a conversation with Allison.

After the transition, when the sister asks Elliot Page’s character what he sees in the mirror, Viktor just replies, “Me. Just myself.”

The smile on the character’s face carries an emotional authenticity that references the journey of its interpreter in real life.

Known for performances in films like Juno and X-Men, American actor Elliot Page announced his gender identity in December 2020. Shortly thereafter, Netflix confirmed that the transition would be included in the plot of The Umbrella Academy.

Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, with Elliot Page as Viktor, is now available on Netflix.
