The commentators butchered Justin Bieber after his concert at Bøgescenen on Wednesday during this year’s Smukfest.

Politiken called the 28-year-old world star’s concert ‘a new low point’, Ekstra Bladet called it ‘shockingly tame’ and Soundvenue called it ‘pitiful’.

BT’s review stated that ‘if I were Smukfest, I would be upset to have spent so much money on what he delivered tonight’.

But Smukfest is not upset.

This is what Mikkel Xavier, who is the booker for the Skanderborg festival, tells BT

“It has been worth the money in every way to get the world’s biggest pop star to Skanderborg,” he emphasizes.

However, he will neither say how much money the festival has had to lose, nor how much of the budget has gone to Justin Bieber.

“We buy pop stars because they have to sell expectations, and the expectations were met in particular,” emphasizes Mikkel Xavier.

Because he believes – contrary to the reviewers – that Justin Bieber looked like someone who “enjoyed being on stage”.

“I think it was a completely magical concert. We had a full booking space, and we had a pop star who shone,’ says the Smukfest booker.

But just the opposite, Justin was accused in the aforementioned reviews that he looked almost sloppy and looked like someone who was bored and didn’t want to be on the Bøgescenen.

“It must be up to the individual reviewer, that is not the impression I have had,” says Mikkel Xavier.

“It is absolutely certain that people have something to relate to, I relate to the show that is on stage and the audience that stood and applauded and enjoyed it and had a really nice evening.”

But that Justin Bieber managed to separate the waters with his Smukfest concert is also evidenced by a visit to the camping area Kærlighenden.

Here, BT meets several festival guests, who are very excited about the concert the following day. Including Cecilie aged 20.

“It was very cool. There were a lot of people. It was completely packed. I don’t know why there was criticism. He seemed to be present and enjoying himself and having a good time. He said that too – that it was great to see so many people. I think he was good,’ she says.

22-year-old Kate also thinks that it was a great experience to see the world star perform in Denmark, although she was more skeptical.

“I’ve been a huge Justin Bieber fan myself, so it was really cool to see him because I haven’t seen him before. But there were many songs where he didn’t sing along properly, and then there was a lot of playback,’ she says.

Valdemar, aged 20, is more critical.

“The concert was a bit boring. There wasn’t much going on in it. He didn’t seem like someone who wanted to be there. That was not my experience of it. He went and hung out a bit and didn’t give much of himself,’ he says.

Justin Bieber himself apparently had a good evening in Skanderborg. At least he’s wearing it Instagram shared a post in which he writes:

‘The audience was crazy last night’ for a drone shot of the massive crowd in front of his concert at the Bøgescenen til Smukfest.
