The Transformers feature films are the figureheads of a franchise that began as a Hasbro toy in the 1980s – and then produced comics, a cartoon series and an animated film before Michael Bay unleashed the Autobots and Decepticons in the first real-life version in 2007. So that you know in which order you should best follow the material battles, you will find the overview of the timeline of the “Transformers” films here.

The “Transformers” order: the franchise overview

The seven “Transformers” films to date can be roughly divided into four groups: The animated film from 1986 is an independent adventure and is based on the cartoon series. The first three real-life adaptations put the young student Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBoeuf) at the center of the riot. The next two films revolve around the inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), while the sixth trick “Bumblebee” is a kind of prequel or reboot for the series.

What is the order of the “Transformers” films?

The films in the “Transformers” franchise build loosely on one another, but are not really held together by a strong story arc. For this reason, it is more or less up to the audience in which order the films are viewed. Anyone already familiar with the main characters like Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and Co. is familiar, you can basically watch the films in any order. You can either start with the animated film, then work your way up chronologically and end again in the 1980s with the prequel / reboot “Bumblebee” or you can start with the film from 2018 and then work your way up to “Transformers: The Last Knight” before. For all the uninitiated, however, we recommend the chronological order of publication (initially) without the animated film, as this is based on the cartoon series and therefore requires knowledge of some characters.

The future of the Transformers franchise

The “Transformers” film franchise was rarely able to inspire the critics, but the real-life films brought in a total of over 4.84 billion US dollars – so there is no end in sight. As of October 2019, several projects are being planned, first and foremost a sequel to the successful prequel “Bumblebee” and a spin-off based on the character Optimus Prime. There are also unconfirmed rumors about a Transformers-GI Joe crossover. “Transformers” fans can look forward to more action bombast in the universe of the Autobots and Decepticons.
