Emmanuel Macron has chosen: it is Paris which will host the future “European or international house of press cartoons”. In “two to three years”, this new place should open its doors in the 6th arrondissement. The Elysée wants to make it a “living house” for all press cartoonists.

Announced in 2020 during the President’s greetings to the press, the project to create a press cartoon house little by little takes shape. The government wants to found an unprecedented place around the caricature and press cartoons, in connection with press freedom. “ It will be a house, not a museum. The objective is to make it a living place, of pedagogy, of media and caricature education, of refuge for cartoonists threatened in their country as well. », specifies theElysium.

This Tuesday, January 11, 2021, Emmanuel Macron declared that this house would move to Paris, although it is intended to affect the entire French territory.

This project was born after the January 2015 terrorist attacks in Charlie Hebdo : the satirical newspaper had been targeted by terrorists, after the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. A few months after the announcement of this project, Samuel Paty was murdered. This press cartoon house is therefore a tribute to the victims, but also to the journalists and cartoonists who continue to claim their freedom to express themselves.

The « European or international house of press cartoons »(The final name is not yet established), should move to an old school, rue du Pont-de-Lodi, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, not far from Notre Dame of Paris, unveils The world. The Elysée indicates that this house should accommodate expositions, animations ofmedia education. It will also be a place of refuge for foreign designers, do we learn in West France.

The City of Paris is committed to handing over this school free of charge. The works and fittings to transform the building should amount to eight million euros. A sum much lower than the other projects in the running. The government also wants to budget for the securing of the building. « It is possible that this place is considered a target », warned the executive.

Limoges, associated with the town of Saint-Just-le-Martel, and Strasbourg had also applied to host this unique place. Emmanuel Macron’s preference for Paris therefore caused a stir. Jean-Claude Leblois, president of the departmental council of Haute-Vienne denounced on France Bleu Limousin « a snub, one more contempt for rural areas ». « It’s a slap (…) to the 250 cartoonists who make their way every year to Saint-Just-le-Martel for the international festival and who mobilized in majority in favor of this meeting place and celebration of freedom of expression », He storms in a press release co-signed with the Saint-Just-le-Martel Caricature Center.
