For Ghostbusters Day, Jason Reitman, director of the last Ghostbusters film, has revealed some details about “Ghostbusters 5”. It’s going back to New York.
– Warning: Spoilers for “Ghostbusters: Legacy” follow –
With “Ghostbusters: Legacy” we managed to do what the 2016 soft reboot “Ghostbusters” didn’t want to: transfer the enthusiasm for a cult film series to a new generation – in the film as well as in reality. The so-called legacy sequel was able to bring in around 200 million US dollars worldwide; and that in the midst of the corona pandemic. Hard to tell what would have actually been in there if those responsible would have waited another six months.
Still, the signal was perfectly adequate for Sony Pictures to green-light another Ghostbusters film straight away. Because audiences loved the film, like a whopping 94 percent rating on the ratings site Rotten Tomatoes proves The good news was brought at the CinemaCon. And as part of Ghostbusters Day on June 8th, the original film was released in cinemas in the USA on June 8th, 1984, Jason Reitman, director of “Ghostbusters: Legacy”, has now revealed exciting details via Twitter:
“We are writing another film. Tonight we will unveil the working title for the next chapter in the Spengler family story.”
“Last time we saw Ecto-1, it was heading back to Manhattan: the home of the Ghostbusters. That’s where our story will begin. The working title is ‘Firehouse’”
Remember, Ghostbusters: Legacy was about Callie (Carrie Coon), a single mother who moves to her late father’s old estate in the country with her two children, Phoebe (McKenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard). Here in the sleepy little town of Summerville, she hopes for a fresh start. But Phoebe and Trevor soon find out that their unknown grandfather was a ghost hunter – Dr. Egon Spengler. And he wasn’t in Summerville looking for a quiet retirement.

In the end, Phoebe, Trevor, Podcast (Logan Kim) and Lucky (Celeste O’Connor) prove worthy successors in the fight against Gozer. They almost didn’t need the help of doyens Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) and Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd). What you need, on the other hand, are cinema highlights. And in the video we show you which films you shouldn’t miss.
“Ghostbusters 5”: It continues with the Spengler descendants
Jason Reitman’s statements do not allow any other conclusion: It continues directly with the Spengler descendants Phoebe and Trevor. But not just in New York, but where it all started – in the disused fire station that Ray, Egon and Peter had converted into the ghost hunter headquarters. In an end credits scene, you could see how the now successful Zeddemore examines the ghostbuster headquarters he has acquired. However, you could already tell that something was wrong with the ghost container in the basement.
So this time, do the old ghost hunters need the help of the next generation to avert a catastrophe of unprecedented proportions that threatens not only all of New York but the entire world? And will Phoebe and Trevor be joined by their friends Podcast and Lucky? It will definitely be interesting to see what Reitman and screenwriter Gil Kenan will come up with for their next mission in the fight against paranormal forces.
