The Eternals: a possible serial prequel on Disney +?

In theaters since November 3, “The Eternals” allowed the introduction of new characters in the MCU. What to give ideas to the writers for a prequel?

The Eternals : new superheroes join the dance

As phase 3 reaches its climax with Avengers : Infinity War, Kevin Feige announced in April 2018 that a film about the Eternals was in development. An idea that, on paper, is quite similar to that of Guardians of the Galaxy. Indeed, not only, this adaptation of the comics of Jack Kirby (appeared in 1976) promised new battles between extraterrestrial races. Above all, the film announced the appearance of a new team of superheroes still unknown to the general public.

Indeed, the Eternals are a group of heroes from the far reaches of space, and present on Earth since the dawn of humanity. Living alongside humans in total anonymity, they are virtually immortal and extremely powerful thanks to the cosmic energy that permeates their bodies. Among the Eternals are Sersi, Ikaris, Thena, Ajak, Kingo, Sprite, Druig, Phastos, Makkari and Gilgamesh.

Being part of the flagship films of this new Phase 4 of the MCU, The Eternals currently hovers at the top of the American box office with 121.9 million dollars collected (284.5 million worldwide). An honest score, but which does not manage to hide the very divided feedback from critics and the public towards this new Marvel feature film. Indeed, if the film pleased the editorial staff, it was not the same for everyone, as evidenced by its percentage of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes. A rate far from being ridiculous, but historically low for an MCU movie.

After the cinema, Disney +?

Despite the icy criticism of their feature film, writers Ryan and Kaz Firpo, who co-wrote the script for the film, do not wish to stop there. Indeed, as they declare during their interview with Collider, they are motivated to deepen the universe of this very special superhero team:

There would be enough to do a series on Disney +. Maybe after doing Eternals 2 and 3, we could go to the prequels and do 10 episodes of it. Each episode would then be dedicated to an Eternal in a very specific period. Thena’s episode could take place in Ancient Greece, where she frequents Aristotle, occurs in the Colosseum, and takes part in the Peloponnesian War. Kingo would help Gandhi to separate from the British in the 1920s (…) We would like to see Sprite live in Shakespeare’s England, be a magician, or support Harry Houdini. There are so many opportunities to watch these truly fascinating times in history.

On paper, this idea would indeed have a lot of potential. Above all, Disney + has proven in recent years that Marvel miniseries could work really well, as show Wandavision, Falcon & The Winter Soldier, Loki or What if… ?. Again, this would allow a more extensive exploration of the relationship between The Eternals and the great periods of human history. Vast program, therefore.

We’ll have to see what Marvel Studios officially thinks about it, given the amount of projects that the studio already has under its arm for the next few years.
