Created by Clio Barnardthe series is based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Perry.

The plot is set in 1893 and revolves around a young widow and the legend of a mystical serpent.

“When Cora Seaborne’s brilliant and domineering husband dies, she begins her new life as a widow with both relief and sadness: her marriage was not a happy one. Married at nineteen, this woman of exceptional intelligence and curiosity was unsuited for the role of society’s wife. Seeking refuge in the fresh air and open space after the funeral, Cora leaves London for a visit to the Essex coast, accompanied by her eleven-year-old son Francis and the boy’s nanny Martha, her fiercely protective friend.

While admiring the place, Cora learns of an intriguing rumor of a fearsome creature that roams the swamps claiming human lives. After nearly 300 years, the mythical Essex Serpent is said to have returned, taking the life of a young man on New Year’s Eve. A keen naturalist with no patience for superstition, Cora is immediately fascinated, and certain that what the locals think is a magical sea beast could be an as-yet-undiscovered species. Eager to investigate, she is introduced to the local vicar, William Ransome. Will is also suspicious of the rumors. But unlike Cora, this man of faith is convinced that the rumors are caused by moral panic, a flight from true belief.

These seeming opposites who don’t agree on anything soon find themselves inexorably joined and torn apart – an intense relationship that will change both their lives in totally unexpected ways.”

Frank Dillane, Clémence Poesy and Hayley Squires complete the list.
