The Crown: Season 5 Left Many Royal Family Scandals Out

Now available on Netflix, season 5 of The Crown tackles some of the Royal Family’s biggest scandals – from ‘Tampongate’ to Prince Charles and Lady Di’s divorce, to the public’s growing dislike of the monarchy. However, not even the 10 episodes of the new year are able to address all the royal scandals.

“Diana and Charles wage a tabloid war, and the role of the monarchy begins to be questioned. It looks like the 1990s will bring challenges for Queen Elizabeth,” states the official synopsis for The Crown season 5.

Continues after advertising

In the new episodes, Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter) gives life to Queen Elizabeth II. The cast also includes Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones), Dominic West (The Wire), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) and Lesley Manville (Harlots).

We show below some scandals of the Royal Family that the 5th season of The Crown does not show; check out.

The Crown 5 does not address scandals of Lady Di and other members of the Royal Family

The “Tanpongate” – Prince Charles’ embarrassing call to Camilla – is the main theme of The Crown season 5, episode 5.

However, the Netflix series leaves out “Squidgygate”, another Royal Family telephone scandal. In that case, Princess Diana was the main one affected.

In 1992, the British tabloid The Sun published a transcript of an “intimate” call from Lady Di to friend James Gilbey. On roll call, Gilbey calls Diana by her nickname “squidgy” (an English expression that can be translated as ‘soft’).

In the call, Diana also compares her own marriage to that of a character on EastEnders, one of the UK’s most popular soap operas.

Season 5 of The Crown also fails to address Charles and Diana’s trip to India, which also took place in 1992.

It was on this trip that Diana took an iconic photo, alone, in front of the Taj Mahal. The monument, it is worth remembering, represents the love of a husband for his wife.

“She looked sad, I think she knew how the story was going to end,” says historian Anwar Hussein.

More than 20 years later, in 2016, Prince William and Kate Middleton took a picture in this very spot.

Season 5 of The Crown begins in 1991 and ends in 1997. Even so, the series leaves out some of Princess Diana’s greatest acts of charity, including her famous steps across an Angolan minefield.

Finally, The Crown 5 also fails to address (in depth) Diana’s breakup with surgeon Hasnat Khan.

Other events such as Princess Anne’s wedding to Sir. Timothy Laurence, are just quoted.

The 5th season of The Crown is now available in the catalog of Netflix🇧🇷
