The masks as the secret star of the film

The threat to the gripper is not only due to his psyche, but also to the menacing masks, which can be changed in many ways. Sometimes the gripper “smiles”, sometimes he is anything but happy. Scott Derrickson explained the use of the masks to us as follows:

“I knew the masks were as important to the film as anything else. And if I’m Ethan [Hawke] sometimes I want to see something of him too. That’s why I came up with the idea of making three masks and cutting them all in half. And then it got interesting to find out why he wears which mask in which scene.”

Ethan Hawke was also fascinated by the masks:

“The mask is constantly changing. That’s what makes it so unique. How we selected each for the specific scene to affect performance. That alone was terrifying. Because you wonder, why is someone hiding? What is this someone hiding? That’s when our brains start to boil.”

Young actor Mason Thames saw the masks in the basement on his first day of shooting and described his initial reaction as follows:

“I remember how [Ethan Hawke] came down the stairs ready to shoot and he had the mask on. I just stood there and was like, ‘Oh my God!’”

How the masks will act in the finished film, and how disturbing it is for the audience to see a changing mask over a running time of 104 minutes, can be experienced by viewers starting on June 23, 2022, when “The Black Phone” in starts in cinemas.
