The army will relax its recruitment requirements

Among the items open for discussion are vision requirements for pilots, Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet van Antwerpen and Het Belang van Limburg report on Monday.

A vast recruitment campaign for Defense has already been underway for a long time, but there is now talk of reforming the selection procedures. In this way, the medical requirements for future soldiers will be relaxed. According to Ms. Dedonder, the criteria are no longer in phase with the current situation, so that the army must decline the candidacy of interested persons, even if the reason is sometimes outdated.

Working groups are therefore studying the various criteria in the light of “medical progress in recent years”. The Belgian criteria are also compared with those of neighboring countries and possible NATO requirements. The vision requirements for pilots in the Belgian army are for example higher than those of neighboring armies, note the experts. Military candidates with diabetes are currently still excluded from military service, but soon they will also be able to access certain military positions.
