Young dad Kieran Downey was due to pick up his wife, Marie, and their four-day-old baby from the hospital when he got the news. Marie had suffered an epileptic seizure in her hospital room, to the point of falling out of bed and trapping her newborn baby under her weight, Cork Live reports.

In court, perinatal pathologist Dr Peter Kelehan said Darragh’s life could have been saved if a staff member had intervened within about four minutes of the tragedy. While her mother suffered a fatal neck injury while falling, her toddler died of asphyxiation.

“We waited more than two and a half years for that day to come,” Kieran testified at the end of the hearing. “And while relieved that this painful process is over, our hearts remain broken. We are grateful to the jury for their verdict and recommendations which will hopefully prevent this kind of tragedy from affecting another family. “

“Marie and Darragh will never be forgotten,” he added. “They will live in our hearts forever. “
