Suspected violation of medical guidelines
Charité in Berlin announces director of the heart clinic
The Charité fired the director of its heart clinic on the Virchow campus at short notice. He is accused of doctors having performed interventions on patients without the appropriate qualifications. By Chris Humbs and Jan Wiese
The Charité has fired the director of the medical clinic with a focus on cardiology at the Virchow-Klinikum campus. This was confirmed by Manuela Zingl, the spokeswoman for the Charité, of the rbb24 research editors. She did not comment on the reasons due to “employer duties of care”.
According to rbb information, the clinic director is accused of medical interventions being carried out in his area without the doctors used having the appropriate qualifications. He is also said to have violated the Charité’s compliance guidelines.
Medical interventions by unqualified personnel
In the cardiology clinic on the Virchow campus, doctors would have carried out cardiac catheter examinations independently without the necessary training, with the knowledge of the clinic director.
In addition, the clinic director is said to have established business relationships between his clinic and a private medical company run by his wife. Apparently, this is a violation of the Charité’s compliance guidelines.
Suspicion: Orders assigned to own company
According to information from rbb24 research, the shareholders of this company are the clinic director himself, his wife and another employee of the cardiology clinic. In addition, the director’s wife is also employed by the Charité, in the clinic that he managed to the end.
When asked, the clinic director was surprised at the termination. He also declined to comment, citing the ongoing proceedings.
Since 2014, the doctor with a doctorate has headed the medical clinic with a focus on cardiology. He is also director of the cardiology clinic at the German Heart Center Berlin and is a professor of internal medicine and cardiology at the Charité. He is highly regarded in medical research and is one of the most cited scientists worldwide.
