Strictest ban on youth: Disturbing Netflix trailer for the biopic about Marilyn Monroe

Netflix has released a first teaser trailer for upcoming biopic Blonde, which will see Ana de Armas play Marilyn Monroe.

Ana de Armas is currently one of the most exciting and thrilling actresses in Hollywood: as CIA agent Paloma, despite a relatively small role, she provided the best minutes in Daniel Craig’s Bond farewell film “No Time to Die”. Before that, she starred alongside numerous stars, including alongside Chris Evans and also Craig, in the crime thriller Knives Out. And together with her ex-boyfriend Ben Affleck, she captivated as the opaque Melinda in the erotic Amazon thriller “Deep Water”. There’s no question that the 34-year-old’s range of acting skills is huge, you really trust her to be capable of almost anything.

So it’s no wonder director Andrew Dominik chose her to play Marilyn Monroe in his biopic Blonde for Netflix after Jessica Chastain dropped out. A stroke of luck considering the recently released and rather disturbing teaser trailer. In just one minute, the Cuban slays you with her incredible charisma, which does credit to the great Monroe and also lets the mania that is said to shine through her:

“Blonde”: Biopic about Marilyn Monroe has a high age rating

From director Andrew Dominik (“Killing Them Softly”) and producer Brad Pitt, “Blonde” is adapted from bestselling author Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same title, which is classified in the realm of historical fiction rather than biography is intended. Although it covers the life of Norma Jeane Mortenson, who achieved worldwide fame as the sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, other famous personalities in her life appear here with different names or only with initials.

The film caused quite a stir a few months ago when it was announced that it would receive an NC 17 rating in the USA. This is the highest possible release there, similar to the German FSK:18 or no youth release. This means that in the United States, no one under the age of 18 can buy a movie ticket for Blonde. But since the theatrical release plays a subordinate economic role for Netflix and is only of interest for possible attention at award ceremonies, the age rating in this case could even be regarded as additional advertising for “Blonde”. In fact, this is the first Netflix-owned film with such a high age rating.

You can stream the more harmless, but equally beautiful “My Week with Marilyn” via Amazon

The only reason given so far is “some sexual content”. A bit of sex and/or nudity is more likely to give a film an R rating. The information that Netflix director Dominik had to cut out some scenes that were too explicit gives a little more insight. In addition, the filmmaker, who has already explored boundaries with the hard “Chopper”, is said to have included a rape that was very explicitly described in Oates’ novel in the film. That means something. Opposite to Screen Daily Dominik explained:

“It’s a challenging film. If the audience doesn’t like him, it’s the fucking audience’s problem. It’s not about running for public office. It’s an NC-17 film about Marilyn Monroe. That’s exactly what you want, isn’t it? I want to see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

In addition to Ana de Armas, Adrien Brody, Garret Dillahunt, Bobby Cannavale, Julianne Nicholson, Scoot McNairy and Sara Paxton also star. “Blonde” will celebrate its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival before it then opens in September 23, 2022 will be available via Netflix. But only for adults!
