‘Steel Giants’ is getting a TV series on Disney+ with the production of Shawn Levy, director of the film

Released in 2011, ‘Steel giants‘ he brought Hugh Jackman as a trainer of fighting robots in a dramatic adventure that won over the public.

Directed by Shawn Levy (‘Free Guy’), the feature was budgeted at $110 million and collected US$ 299.2 million around the world.

And, according to Variety, Disney+ is developing a series based on the short story ‘Steel’ by author Richard Matheson, material that gave rise to the film.

The project is the result of a partnership between A 20th Television and the production companies Compari Entertainment and Angry Films.

It was also said that the attraction will bring Levy as an executive producer, along with Robert Zemeckis (‘Back to the Future’).

For now, the project is still in the early stages and no screenwriters have been hired.

Speaking of continuation…

Despite calls for a sequel, the idea never went ahead, but Levy revealed to Inverse who talked to Jackman and a new story can still happen.

The filmmaker said he has been excited about the project since the original was added to the Netflix and has been recording good audience numbers ever since.

“A sequel to something that’s been on my mind and in conversations lately. Perhaps because of the fact that when the Netflix started streaming it during the pandemic, it has become one of their most popular titles. After that, Hugh and I started talking a lot about this love for ‘Steel giants‘.”

He continued:

“Well, we love this movie as much as the audience. The sequel is one of those projects where you think, ‘Never say never’. It seems that the love of the fans has not ended. So who knows?”

For those who don’t remember, the plot follows Charlie Kenton, a former boxer frustrated after the sport has become a high-tech modality, being commanded by highly developed robots.

He abandons his profession and starts to make a living from small fights with robots made from scrap metal scraps. When his career seems to have come to an end, Charlie is reunited with son Max Kenton (Dakota Goyo) for a last-ditch attempt to become a winner with a discredited robot.
