Spain: the skeleton of a republican soldier found in Catalonia more than 80 years after the end of the civil war

The body was found during archaeological excavations near the medieval Pilar d’Almenara (Agramunt) tower, near Lérida, east of Barcelona. It would belong to a soldier of the republican infantry.

The skeleton was found during an excavation carried out from July 11 to 15 in this medieval site by the Direcció General de Memòria Democràtica. The remains were buried in a pit at the foot of the tower. A surprise for archaeologists since there was no indication of the presence of possible human remains in this place, reveals the Generalitat.

The skeleton would be that of an adult male. Objects found nearby suggest that it belonged to the Republican infantry during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Its presence could be linked to a defensive bunker then built near the site. The cause of death and his identity are not yet known but a sample of bone tissue has been taken and will be crossed with the database of the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona in order to establish his genetic profile. and return the remains to the family. If no identification is possible, the remains will be buried in the cemetery of the municipality of Almenara Alta.

A little history

Agramunt was, during the Civil War, a Republican rearguard area. Several pits have been recorded, probably attached to medical bases. During the civil war of 1936-1939, the Republican army built a bunker there and dug trenches to defend the entrance to the town of Agramunt and the accesses to La Segarra.

The medieval tower was built in the 11th century, it is 15 meters high and 7 meters in diameter. It is located on the Almenara mountain at 459 meters above sea level and dominates the plain of Urgell.
