Social networks x face surgery: web exposure increases demand and expert warns of dangers

Brazil is one of the countries where most plastic surgeries are performed in the world.. However, since 2020, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of interventions grew even more, with emphasis on those carried out on the face, which increased 300%.

Paolo Rubeza member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, highlights that growth is multifactorial and involves both technological advances and behavioral changes.

“One of the reasons is the evolution of operative techniques, which today allow patients to have natural results, without the stigma of plastic surgery. Another point is the use of social networks, selfies and videos and videoconferences, which make people see a lot more and look for procedures to get better”, he explains.

Use of filters and Photoshops boost surgeries

Paolo Rubez points out that the use of filters and Photoshop also boost surgeries, because people create the desire to be similar to how they present themselves on social networks, definitively. Likewise, influencers are also plastic surgery catalysts. However, he warns of the dangers of taking digital life as a rule of beauty and well-being.

“Often, what we observe on social media does not correspond to reality, as people use a lot of filters, photoshop and they are not exactly what they seem. These behaviors also make some people never satisfied with their appearance, which makes them seek more and more procedures, without a real need”, he comments.

to avoid the call body dysmorphia, or even if the patient undergoes an intervention unnecessarily, the health professional’s perspective is essential. The specialist says it is the physician’s role to identify these behaviors and guide patients, so as not to generate dissatisfaction or the search for a relentless result.

Facial plastic and its care

By altering the face, the surgery performed on the face needs to be analyzed and planned very seriously, both by the patient and by the doctor.

“The patient must be very determined about the desire for change, because it will be something irreversible, just as it is necessary to align expectations with the surgeon. It is essential that the patient knows the limitations of the procedure and that, for example, he will not have the same result than any other person, because each human being has different characteristics”, observes Paolo Rubez.

When choosing a professional, he emphasizes that research is what will bring security and minimize complications and dissatisfaction.

“It is a key point when deciding to have plastic surgery, especially on the face. Research training, specializations, assess whether the professional studied at a good university and did medical residency in the area. Analyzing previous results from other patients is also essential” , points out.

Despite a common practice, the dentist recommends that the patient not only consider the professional’s social networks: he can be deceived by a well-done marketing. “It is necessary that the analysis is in person. The patient needs to feel trust and empathy for the professional and this is better evaluated after going through a consultation”, he guarantees.
