The young boy was showing signs of hypothermia, reports the Lake County coroner’s office. The medical examiner also detected signs of partial body burn, which appears to have occurred after death.
According to Jannie Perry, the 38-year-old mom, 16-year-old son and sister drove to a party in Skokie, Illinois. Damari’s sister told police she fell asleep at the party after having had several drinks and woke up to find neither her brother nor the man who drove them to the party .
But that story was quickly “contradicted,” said prosecutor Eric Reinhardt. “Investigators quickly turned to the boy’s home in North Chicago after the family story was contradicted by evidence in Skokie. “
According to the prosecution, after “doing something to upset the family”, Damari was punished by being forced to take a cold shower “for an indefinite period”. At one point during the punishment, Damari vomited and was taken out of the shower before dying.
His older brother, Jeremiah R. Perry, 20, has been charged with aggravated bodily harm causing grievous bodily harm to a child under 12, concealing a homicidal death and obstructing justice. Damari’s mother has also been charged with first degree murder, concealing a homicidal death and obstructing justice.
The investigation is still ongoing and charges could be added according to the next information.
