Shang-Chi’s actress past is unearthed and she is canceled

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is at Disney+, consolidating success on the MCU. One of the stars of Marvel’s feature film is Awkwafina. The actress and rapper plays Katy, one of the protagonist’s best friends, and has been criticized on the internet for an alleged cultural appropriation.

Awkwafina is mainly known for the films 8 Women and a Secret and the Rotten of the Rich, as well as the semi-biographical series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, but began her career in the entertainment industry as a rapper, even viralizing some videos on social media.

From the beginning of her career to the height of her fame, Awkwafina adopted a very characteristic way of speaking, with an accent normally associated with the African-American population. After “changing voices” as her popularity increased, the actress was accused of cultural appropriation.

Shang-Chi’s Star Controversy

Actress and comedian Awkwafina has been criticized online for her “accent” in older roles. The controversy comes amid the release of two of his most recent projects: the 2nd season of the series Nora From Queens and Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.

Twitter users detonated the Marvel actress after a speech by Awkwafina about her resistance to using accents that match the Asian stereotype in her performances.

“I already gave up on auditions when the director simply changed his mind and asked me to speak with an accent. I refuse to fake accents. Most of my characters are real, and the fact that they are Asian is not usually part of their narratives”, commented the actress in an interview with Vice.

“I don’t think it’s cool for someone to write the Asian experience for an Asian character. I find this irritating. I never participate in auditions when I feel that I am practicing a negative stereotype about our people”, concluded the actress.

In response, the actress was widely criticized for appropriating the AAVE – African American Vernacular English – a speech pattern associated primarily with the African-American population of urban areas.

“I treat Awkwafina like I treat Miley Cyrus. I’m glad you found yourself, but I still remember your ‘blaccent’ and how you discarded it when it didn’t suit you anymore,” commented a Twitter user.

“Blaccent” is also associated with the speech pattern of the urban black population in the United States.

In the past, various media outlets have linked Awkwafina’s “blaccent” to her teenage years in Queens, New York. Even so, the actress was still criticized for her lack of authenticity.

“Her reliance on stereotypes of the black population is quite ironic, especially since she understands how problematic these aspects can become for a minority community,” explained the website Fenestella.

Awkwafina did not comment on the charges. Popular Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings is on Disney+.
