“Tomb Raider” is one of those major video game brands that have already received several film adaptations. In the future, however, these will no longer be produced by MGM.
The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) film production company is for three Tomb Raider Movies responsible. It will probably stay that way, because according to a report from the industry magazine The Wrap there will be no more “Tomb Raider” offshoots, at least under the leadership of MGM.
She is an icon in video game history and has appeared in 14 video game adventures since her debut in 1996. After the first four games were released, the first screen adaptation “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” finally came with Angelina Jolie in the role of the eponymous treasure hunter. Despite miserable reviews and a lack of success at the box office, there was a sequel in 2003.
Instead of Simon West (“Con Air”), Jan den Bont (“Basic Instinct”) now took his place in the director’s chair and staged a sequel with “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – Die Wiege des Lebens”, which was a little bad for the trade press was better received than its predecessor, but was an even bigger flop from a financial point of view.
Eventually, the series ended after just two spins before the brand was dug up and relaunched in 2018. Under the simple title “Tomb Raider” fell Alicia Vikander as the titular heroine in the adventure directed by Roar Uthaug (“The Wave”). Here, too, there was no mega success, but Alicia Vikander and MGM already had plans for a sequel.
In the following lines we will tell you why there will initially be no “Tomb Raider” sequel with Alicia Vikander. But first we would like to present you ten more sequels that will probably never see the light of day:
That’s why Tomb Raider isn’t getting a sequel
The preparations for “Tomb Raider 2” were already in full swing: Misha Greenwho took over as screenwriter and director after the departure of Amy Jump and Ben Wheatley, had already announced via in May 2021 Twitter announces that the first draft of the script for the film, working title Tomb Raider: Obsidian, has been completed.
“There is still a long way to go before the start of production. The title hasn’t been confirmed yet either. But the first draft is ready.”
But now MGM recently lost the film rights to “Tomb Raider” because the deadline to give the film a green light of May 2022 was not met. The rights reverted to film producer Graham King and his production company GK Films. Various film studios and streaming services are said to be interested in the brand, so a real bidding is now underway.
What will happen to the brand is therefore still unclear. But it is certain that Alicia Vikander was relieved of her role as Lara Croft and a new actress will follow in her footsteps once the rights have landed with a new owner. If you want to rewatch the 33-year-old actress’ first and only appearance as an adventurous archaeologist, Tomb Raider is available to buy and rent on Amazon Prime Video.
