At that time, he had said that there was a scam of about Rs 100 crore. On Friday, the SIT constituted by the government in this matter reached the district headquarters and investigated and summoned old records from the Social Welfare Department. This was disclosed by the then District Social Welfare Officer Rinku Singh Rahi.
Deadly attack on social welfare officer
The then social welfare officer Rinku Singh Rahi, who exposed the scholarship scam, was attacked on 26 March 2009 in Officers Colony located in the former planning office on Arya Samaj Road when he was playing badminton. Two youths who came on a bike shot and injured them. His jaw and one eye were damaged by the bullet. His brother Dinesh Rahi had filed a report against unknown assailants in the case. In this case, on February 2021, the court held Ashok Kashyap, Assistant Accountant, Social Welfare Department, Prahlad, Amit Chhokar, Babi alias Pankaj guilty of murderous attack on Rinku Singh Rahi and sentenced them to ten years rigorous imprisonment under section 307 and section 34. And was sentenced to fine of 20-20 thousand rupees.
Rinku Rahi raised questions on the investigation of the scam
When the decision to attack Rinku Rahi came, Rinku Rahi said that she was attacked for exposing the scholarship scam, it was not investigated seriously. The inquiry committees did not even call him to give a statement. Had the scam been investigated properly, it would have turned out to be a scam of even more than Rs 100 crore. After this, the government constituted SIT to investigate it, which is investigating afresh.
SIT team arrived from Lucknow to investigate
In the SIT, SP Devranjan Verma reached here on Friday to investigate with an inspector, two sub-inspectors and three constables. He went to the District Social Welfare Department office located at Vikas Bhawan and met Social Welfare Officer GR Prajapati and started investigation. The Social Welfare Officer said that the SIT summoned the files related to the scholarship scheme from the year 2004 to 2009. Along with this, the old record of the money paid to the schools has also been sought. Some documents of record have also been taken by the SIT officers with them. Information was also obtained about the old employees.
Checked twice before
The scholarship scam has been investigated twice before the government level by constituting an inquiry committee. The first committee was formed under the chairmanship of Alka Tandon, Joint Director Social Welfare of Meerut, this committee had given a report of Rs 20 crore scam to the government. The government was not satisfied with his report and after that a committee was constituted under the chairmanship of Mrityunjay Narayan, the then divisional commissioner of Meerut division. This committee investigated for two years and submitted its report to the government considering it to be a scam of Rs 50 crore. Now this scam is being investigated for the third time. This time SIT has been constituted for investigation.
