The Hollywood legend actually wanted to revive his biggest role again – but unfortunately nothing will come of it.
Today it is impossible to imagine the Hollywood landscape without Sylvester Stallone. Mainly through riot films and his muscle mountains, Stallone cemented his reputation as an action legend. It’s easy to overlook the fact that it all started with a really small sports drama in which Stallone wasn’t even supposed to star. Of course we’re talking about “Rocky” for which Stallone contributed the screenplay, but it was only after a tough struggle and major budget cuts that he was allowed to play the boxing title hero Rocky Balboa.
What followed was a completely surprising triumph: “Rocky” was nominated for ten Oscars, including Stallone for Best Actor. In what is probably the most important category, Best Picture, it actually won and to date only two films with an even lower budget (“Moonlight” and “Marty”) have succeeded. Sylvester Stallone became world famous practically overnight, after he had previously kept his head above water as an extra and, among other things, as a cleaner in a zoo. As is well known, it was the beginning of an impressive career, but unsurprisingly Rocky always had a special place in Stallone’s heart, and it was not without reason that five direct sequels followed.
In 2015, however, it was time to pass the boxing gloves on to the next generation and this honor was given to Michael B. Jordan in “Creed – Rocky’s Legacy”. In it he plays the titular Adonis Creed, the illegitimate son of Rocky’s first opponent and later friend Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). The continuation Creed II – Rocky’s Legacy can you at Saturday, May 14 from 8:15 p.m. on VOX watch – and a truly emotional duel awaits you in it.
Because Rocky’s old adversary Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) now also has a boxing son named Viktor (Florian Munteanu), who challenges Creed. The gripping boxing match between the two isn’t the only reason why you should check out “Creed 2”: It probably is the last time you’ll see Sylvester Stallone as Rocky. The perfect moment to reminisce:
Stallone’s big “Rocky” plan burst
In the planned “Creed 3” Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and Florian Munteanu will be there again, while Jonathan Majors (“Loki”) will step into the ring as an opponent this time. But we have to do without Stallone. He’s not supposed to appear as Rocky in the film again, but he will certainly be mentioned and thus play a role in spirit.
Sylvester Stallone actually intended to continue his series with “Rocky 7”, but at the end of 2021 Stallone revealed that the eternal “Rocky” producer Irwin Winkler put a stop to his plan (via movie hole). So it seems as if Stallone’s desired farewell performance as a world-famous boxer will no longer happen. All the more reason to follow “Creed 2” carefully in order to be able to properly enjoy what are probably the last impressions of Rocky Balboa in film history.
Sylvester Stallone shaped the action genre. But how well do you know it? For example, how many of the most famous riot movies can you spot from just one image?
