SÃO JOÃO DE CARUARU: GET TO KNOW 5 CURIOSITIES ABOUT ONE OF THE BIGGEST EVENTS IN THE WORLD

1) The beginning of São João de Caruaru

According to historian and cultural consultant Walmiré Dimeron, born in Caruaru and specialist in matters related to the memory of the city, the first records that mention the June festivities there date from the 19th century, around the 1850swhen the municipality was still a village.

In an interview with the NE10 Interior portal, he reports that, until the end of the 1950s, the June festivals took place on farms in the region and, in the following decade, they began to spread through the streets of Caruaru.

2) The title of Capital do Forró

Caruaru disputes with Campina Grande, in Paraíba, the title of biggest São João in the world. Nonetheless, there is an expression attributed to the city of Pernambuco that no other takes: Capital do Forró. This nickname was popularized thanks to a song.

In the 1980s, when the tradition of São João de Caruaru begins to gain tourist strength and draw the attention of the city hall, Trio Nordestino recorded a song with this title, which paid homage to the passion of the people of Caruaru for this festival. “The radios there go out on the streets, don’t leave the baião for a single minute / That’s why Caruaru is the capital of forró / It’s the capital of forró, it’s the capital of forró“, says the chorus.

3) Last São João de Caruaru before the pandemic broke records

According to the NE10 Interior portal, the 2019 São João de Caruaru, the last held before the pandemic, received about 3.2 million people. It is estimated that an average of 50,000 people were at Pátio do Forró per day during the event, reaching over 100,000 on the main dates.

Who performed to an audience of 100 thousand people was Marília Mendonçawhich premiered on the main stage of São João de Caruaru that year in the middle of Valentine’s Day.

4) Giant foods are highlights of São João de Caruaru

One of the main attractions of São João de Caruaru is the giant food and drinks. In different areas of the city, the public gathers to try a greatly enlarged version of some traditional dish..

In 2019, for example, the public was able to enjoy the biggest hot chocolate, the biggest corn stew in bottled butter, the biggest couscous, the biggest stew, among other dishes. One of the most famous, however, is the giant foot of the kid.. In 2008, the delicacy weighed 2 tons. According to the G1, 1,800 eggs, 600 kilos of cassava, 180 kilos of margarine, 300 kilos of sugar and 45 kilos of nuts are needed for the recipe.

5) Was São João de Caruaru recognized by Guinness?

For many years, it has been circulating on social media, the news that São João de Caruaru was recognized by the Guinness Book, the book of records, as the largest in the worldwhich would put an end to the old dispute with Campina Grande.

However, the information is not yet forthcoming. With the strength that the news gained last year, during the absence of the June festivities, G1 consulted the Guinness Book team, who informed that the category is not currently monitored by the organization. Therefore, neither of the two cities could be recognized by the record books..
