Sandman: Netflix nailed the choice of Morpheus; see comparison

Sandman arrived in the Netflix catalog, telling the story of Dream, or Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams.

Who takes on the role is Tom Sturridge, an actor who hasn’t had any major work yet. It turns out that choosing a person to play Morpheus was a very complicated process.

Continues after advertising

According to Neil Gaiman, more than a thousand actors auditioned for the role. Tom Sturridge stood out as the one he liked the most, and it’s not hard to see why.

Thin, tall and pale, the actor fits the Lord of Dreams’ physiognomy very well. At the same time, he manages to bring the essential posture to the character.

Great choice for the role of Morpheus

But it’s not just about looks. The actor manages to deliver a very convincing voice work, maintaining a tone of calm and depth at all times.

Morpheus is not human. Even more importantly, he can’t quite understand humans. So emotions are not his strong point, which Tom Sturridge seems to understand well.

The character can seem distant and mean, which is perfectly fine. Morpheus may be the main character in Sandman, but he’s also oblivious to a lot of things that happen in the story, which is the case in both the comics and the adaptation.

Sandman is now available on Netflix.
