Netflix’s Sandman series, like any other adaptation, makes changes to certain aspects of the source material. One of the most notable is the exchange of John Constantine for Johanna Constantine. Now, it looks like she might get a spinoff series.
Johanna also exists in the original comics, but as an ancestor of John. In the series, John does not exist, having been replaced by the female version lived by Jenna Coleman, including in the present.
John Constantine first appeared in Alan Moore’s acclaimed Swamp Thing series in issue #37, but quickly became popular enough to earn his own comic.
The character has made several on-screen appearances, first played by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film Constantine, and later by Matt Ryan in a short-lived series as part of the Arrowverse.
While the character plays a critical role in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics, several factors led to John Constantine becoming Johanna Constantine for the Netflix adaptation.
Series about Johanna Constantine
Johanna Constantine appears later in the comic book series, so the decision was made that an actress would portray both the ancestor and the descendant who knows Dream (Tom Sturridge).
“Given that there really weren’t that many women in the beginning, the idea that we could find one person and have them do both seemed cool and straightforward,” Gaiman told the magazine. /film while discussing how the character is portrayed in the series.
With Jenna Coleman as Johanna, fans and critics alike have been wondering if Johanna Constantine could have her own spin-off, as she excelled in the role.
At the twittera Sandman fan, told Neil Gaiman:
“I think it would be cool to have a Johanna Constantine show on Netflix.”
It didn’t take long for Neil Gaiman to reply, “You are not alone in this thought.”
So, if Sandman is successful on Netflix (which seems to be the case, but it’s too early to say), it could be that the character ends up getting a spin-off series in the future.
Sandman is now available on Netflix.
