Roberto Scarpinato, the attorney general of Palermo retires at 70: a life for the anti-mafia, from the Andreotti trial to the massacres

On the day of his seventieth birthday he retires Roberto Scarpinato, attorney general of Palermo and one of the most important anti-Mafia magistrates in Italian history. The withdrawal comes at the end of one 42-year career, all carried out in the Sicilian capital: as deputy prosecutor he dealt – among other things – with the investigations into the murders of Pio La Torre, Piersanti Mattarella, Giuseppe Reina e Michele Reina, as well as the trial for mafia association against Giulio Andreotti. In 1989 he joined the anti-mafia pool together with Giovanni Falcone e Paolo Borsellino: after the massacre in via D’Amelio he was the promoter of the revolt of eight pm against the chief prosecutor Piero Giammanco, accused of having favored the isolation of Falcone. From Deputy Attorney for years he has dealt with the relationship between the mafia and the economy and the investigation into the state-mafia negotiation in the years of the massacres, until his appointment as attorney general at the Court of Appeal in 2013.

Together with him she retires Teresa Principality, also a former deputy prosecutor of Palermo – author of important investigations, from those on Cosa Nostra in the Agrigento area to those on the inaction of Bernardo Provenzano and Matteo Messina Denaro – and current substitute of the National Anti-Mafia Directorate (Dna). On Wednesday the councilor Csm Nino Di Matteo asked to speak during the plenum session “to remember two colleagues who represented and represent the history of best Italian judiciary of the last decades. Above all, starting from that terrible 1992, that both lived alongside Paolo Borsellino, carrying out the functions of deputy prosecutors ”. Scarpinato, he said, “has represented and will continue to represent an example and a irreplaceable reference, for the lucidity of his analyzes, for the ability to grasp the most hidden aspects of criminal systems, for the high vision and always oriented towards the effective application of constitutional principles “.
