The premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is approaching on Amazon Prime Video. The series will not feature the involvement of Peter Jackson, director of the renowned trilogy of films and there is a reason for this.
According to a new report from THR detailing Jackson’s lack of involvement in the series, Tolkien’s estate appears to have played a significant role in keeping the director at bay.
While the showrunners and the studio hold Jackson and his adaptation in high regard, there were legal concerns about keeping the Jackson films and the TV show separate, considering the films are owned by Warner Bros.
Crucially, however, it was Tolkien’s estate that pushed for Jackson not to get involved, likely for creative reasons.
Speaking to THR, Jackson recalls that the producers of The Rings of Power even asked if he would be interested in getting involved, to which the director said he would need to see the scripts first to give an answer.
At the time, no scripts were written and the producers said they would send them in once they were complete. However, no script appeared in Jackson’s inbox and the show went on without him, for which he holds no grudge.
“They asked me if I wanted to be involved – Fran Walsh and I said, ‘That’s an impossible question to answer without seeing a script.’ So they said, ‘Once we get the first scripts, we’ll send them to you.’ And the scripts never showed up. That’s the last thing I heard, which is good. There are no complaints”.
More on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Big-budget The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is considered one of Amazon Prime Video’s biggest bets. Perhaps even the biggest in the streaming service’s history.
The investment is no accident. In both cinema and literature, The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest sagas in pop culture.
In cinema, Peter Jackson directed The Lord of the Rings saga. However, he had no direct involvement in the development of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrives on Amazon Prime Video on the 2nd of September.
