Ranking | From the WORST to the BEST of Chris Hemsworth outside the MCU

In 13 years of career in the cinema, the beautiful star Chris Hemsworth collects some memorable works and others not so much. It is time, therefore, to pause the image of the deity with long locks and a huge hammer, to remember his other roles.

With the debut of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder‘, O CinePOP prepared a ranking from worst to best filmaccording to the metric Rotten Tomatoes (RT).

As said, all the films of the marvel universe are out, special appearances are also excluded, that is, few minutes on screen as in the franchise films Star Trek (2009 and 2013). Let’s go to the list:

12 – Violent dawn (red down2012) – RT 14%

In this remake of Violent dawn (1984), originally starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen, Hemsworth is Jed Eckert. He leads a group of young men to fight the invading enemies that have taken over the United States government. Obviously, it doesn’t have the actuality of the original, in the period of the Cold War, but it pays homage. The film leads the ranking in the worst position, because the characters are very poorly developed and the logic of the North Korean invasion is completely out of tune.

11 – The Huntsman and the Ice Queen (The Huntsman: Winter’s War2016) – RT 16%

Enjoy watching:

Motivated by the success of the first film Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), with grossing over $155 million in the US alone, the Universal Pictures decided to continue the saga. Although the cast has Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt, the film was a failure compared to its predecessor. To give you an idea, the box office reached $48.3 million in the US. The visuals remained fabulous, but the plot didn’t prove the need for a sequel.

10 – MIB: Men in Black – International (Men in Black: International2019) – RT 23%

Repeating the double Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, the continuation of the MIB franchise was one of the biggest fiascos of the past year. After the legacy of Will Smith, Columbia took advantage of the extraterrestrial universe to explore the public’s sympathy for the actors, but the suggestion of the new agents did not please the public, much less the critics. On the other hand, there rumors of a fifth movie with the original cast.

9 – hostages of crime (Ca$h2010) – RT 30%

9 Hostages of Crime

As the first two works by Chris Hemsworth are not on this list Star Trek (2009) and The trail (2009), hostages of crime represents his first relevant role in feature films. The production, however, was released directly on DVD not only in Brazil but also in the USA. Ten years ago, the actor played Sam Phelan, a man who finds a suitcase full of money and begins to be chased. The plot, performances and structure of the work are from a B movie, but this was his first chance to show that he had a knack for action.

8 – hacker (blackhat2015) – RT 33%

8 hacker
8

Considered one of the worst achievements of the renowned Michael Manndirector of The Informant (1999) and The last of the Mohicans (1992), hacker is a timely thematic work – cyber terrorism – but with an inert and confusing plot. Already a superstar like Thor (2011 and 2013), the actor cannot save the intricate plot and the production sinks at the box office, just $19.6 million worldwide.

7 – In the Heart of the Sea (In the Heart of the Sea2015) – RT 45%

In the same year as hacker and Avengers Age of Ultron, Hemsworth closes the calendar with the super production of Ron Howard (Apollo 13, 1995). During filming, the actor shocked fans with images of muscle wasting to play second captain Owen Chase. Inspired by the origin story of the classic Moby Dick, the film has an epic air and a beautiful photographic composition along with the special effects. However, the critics did not forgive the combination of several elements of adventure, fantasy and the shallow historical basis. The production cost around $100 million and grossed $93.9 million worldwide, that is, it was a loss, despite a grandiose spectacle.

6 – Snow White and the hunter (Snow White and the Huntsman2012) – RT 49%

Snow White and the hunter it’s better than In the Heart of the Sea? Few people will think twice before answering, however, as a reinvention of fabled tales, the first pleased more than the second. On the wave of this film model, see The Girl in the Red Hood (2011) and Mirror, My Mirror (2012), the box office success was resounding, which gave rise to the tragic sequel mentioned above, four years later.

5 – 12 Heroes (12 Strong2018) – RT 50%

5 12 Heroes

We reached the Top 5 with a war drama, led by Hemsworth and Michael Shane (Between Knives and Secrets), about real-life heroes facing the aftermath of 9/11 in Afghanistan. Always present in action plots, the actor manages to show his energy and aptitude for it, on the other hand, the criticism of his projects falls on the shallow content. In this case, the script is seen as an advertisement for North American praise.

4 – Rescue (extraction2020) – RT 63%

Netflix’s production highlights the great capacity of Hemsworth in directing an action movie alone. In addition to the protagonist Tyler Hake, the actor also launches himself as a producer of the film, investing the return of his success in Hollywood. With an exciting rescue plot, the film is set against a settling of scores between Indian and Bangladeshi drug lords, which adds a touch of originality to the project. After all, it’s not every day that we see car chases in the alleys of Dhaka [na realidade, as filmagens foram feitas em Ahmedabad, na Índia].

3 – Bad Times at the Hotel Royale (Bad Times at the El Royale2018) – RT 75%

Released in the same year as Avengers: Infinity War and 12 Heroesthe production orchestrated by Drew Goddard (screenwriter of Lost in Mars2015) was the shadows and gained airs of cultdespite the large cast made up of Jeff Bridge and Jon Hamm, to name a few. In the plot, seven strangers, with seven secrets, meet in the hotel of the title and the plot plays with the mystery in an intelligent way and social context, supported by the excellent performances.

two – Rush: On the Edge of Emotion (rush2013) – RT 88%

After being chosen to play the character of Thor in the Marvel universe, this was the main job of his 10-year career. Praised so far for its sexy appeal, the incorporation of pilot James Hunt took him to the status of a great performer. This first partnership with the director Ron Howardwould also take him to the epic In the Heart of the Sea (2015). In addition, the film received two nominations for the Golden Globe – Best Drama Film and Best Supporting Actor for Daniel Bruhl (Goodbye Lenin2003)

1 – The secret of the cabin (The Cabin in the Woods2012) – RT 92%

Directly released on DVD in Brazil, the film scripted and directed by Drew Goddard [sim, o mesmo de Maus Momentos no Hotel Royale] became a cult of the horror genre and considered by critics one of the best films of 2012. Thor (2011), the film is one of the actor’s first. Here, he lives the young Curt, the stereotype of the handsome sportsman, but with few neurons. The success of the work is due to its metalanguage of discussing in a fun way the clichés of teen horror movies and also has the special participation of Sigourney Weaver (Alien, the Eighth Passenger1979).
