Rameez was also asked about the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan to be held in Dubai on October 24. He said, ‘When I met the players of the Pakistani team, I told them that this time the equation should be changed.’
Former Pakistan cricket team captain Rameez Raja officially took over as the chairman of his country’s cricket board on Monday i.e. 13 September 2021. He was unanimously elected as the chairman of the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board). He replaced Ehsan Mani and will hold the post for the next three years.
Rameez Raja took two important decisions for the Pakistan cricket team as soon as he took office. He appointed former Australia opener Matthew Hayden and former South African pacer Vernon Philander as the coaches of the Pakistan team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. He also ruled out the possibility of a bilateral series with India in the near future.
The appointments of Hayden and Philander came a week after head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis resigned from their respective positions. The ICC T20 World Cup 2021 is to be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman from October 17 to November 14.
Rameez Raja has joined PCB for the second time. He previously held the role of PCB CEO in 2003-04 during Shaharyar Khan’s presidency. Rameez Raja was nominated by Imran Khan, the Pakistani Prime Minister and Chief Patron of the PCB.
After taking over as PCB chairman, Rameez Raja promised that he would give more powers to the national captain. He also talked about the resumption of the bilateral series with India. Also admitted that the post of PCB chairman is one of the most difficult roles in cricket.
“It’s a big challenge,” he said. The Prime Minister (Imran Khan) had looked into all aspects before handing over this responsibility to me. Regarding the bilateral series between India and Pakistan, he said, ‘It is impossible right now, because politics has had a bad effect on sports. The status quo is now. We are not in a hurry in this matter as we have to focus on our domestic and local cricket.
Rameez was also asked about the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan to be held in Dubai on October 24. He said, ‘When I met the players of the Pakistani team, I told them that this time the equation should be changed. The team should be 100% ready for this match. They should do well in this.
The PCB chairman wants the national cricketer to play cricket without any hesitation. “We should also be ready to face problems and lose matches. I told the players that they should not worry about their place in the team and play fearlessly.
Abdul Hafeez Kardar (1972 to 1977), Javed Burki (1994 to 1995) and Ejaz Butt (2008. 2011) are former cricketers to have held the post of PCB chairman before Rameez was a member of the 1992 World Cup winning team.
