According to Ramdas Athawale, ‘When the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) got a majority in the 2004 general elections, I had proposed that Sonia Gandhi should become the Prime Minister. I believed that the issue of his foreign origin made no sense. If Kamala Harris can become the Vice President of America, then why can’t Sonia Gandhi, a citizen of India, wife of Rajiv Gandhi (former PM) and elected Lok Sabha MP, become the Prime Minister?’
Ramdas Athawale further said, in place of Manmohan Singh, Sharad Pawar should have made PM, but Sonia Gandhi did not. Had Pawar become the Prime Minister of the country in 2004, the Congress’s position would have been strengthened and the party could have been saved from the present precarious situation.
Let us tell you, it was Sharad Pawar who raised the issue of foreign origin of Sonia Gandhi in 1999. It was only after this that Pawar was expelled from the Congress. Later he formed the NCP. Manmohan Singh served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Narendra Modi replaced him after the BJP came to power with a thumping majority.
Amarinder Singh should join BJP
Ramdas Athawale also appealed to Amarinder Singh that he should join BJP or National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as he has got insult in Congress. He said, if Amarinder Singh joins the BJP, the party’s position will be strengthened in the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab. Let us tell you, Amarinder Singh has recently resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab and he is also upset with the party high command after giving importance to Navjot Singh Sidhu.
