Back in Paris after winning the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi is on track to extend to PSG. But this decision causes some reluctance, and could displease a certain Kylian Mbappé for specific reasons.
Arrived at the club of the French capital during the summer of 2021, Leo Messi finally feels at home at PSG. Author of a very good first part of the season, with 12 goals and 14 assists in 19 games, the Argentinian has regained his best level this season. Returning all smiles from Qatar with the World Cup in his pocket, the 35-year-old star will now approach the rest of the PSG season with great desire, and in particular for the Champions League. A competition that La Pulga hopes to win away from Barça. And PSG is the best place for that.
It is therefore for this reason that Messi is considering signing a contract extension with Paris. While his current contract runs until next June, Messi could sign a new one in the next few weeks, as a few details remain to be settled to get the pen out and sign a contract for one or two more seasons. A deal that seems logical, despite some questions.
Will Messi be at his best after the World Cup?

The first question rests on the future level of Messi. If La Pulga has just won the World Cup with his country by being voted best player ahead of Mbappé, nothing says that Messi will keep a flamboyant game over the coming seasons. It is therefore for this reason that PSG could take the time to think before offering a golden contract with an annual salary of 40 million euros to the Argentinian.
Especially since PSG is in a strong position in this case, even if Messi is free to sign where he wants and his name circulates at Inter Miami or Barça. Paris can really afford the luxury of waiting to see what Messi’s true level will be in the cutthroat European Cup matches after the World Cup where he gave a lot, physically and mentally.

Then there is the Mbappé question. Extended by PSG last summer when he could have joined Real Madrid, the French striker is the central figure of the Ile-de-France project for the years to come. Except that the possible extension of Messi could have negative consequences for the vice-world champion. Quite simply because Mbappé would need a world-class goalscorer by his side to exploit his full potential at the Parc des Princes. But with Neymar and Messi, PSG will not be able to afford the luxury of recruiting another attacking star, let alone having all these beautiful people play together.
Which could pose problems for PSG, according to Eurosport. “Renewing the Argentinian’s lease is the guarantee for PSG to have the two best players of the last World Cup still associated in attack. But it is not necessarily to place the one who embodies his present and his future under the conditions that his status implies., can we read on the sports site, which suggests that the French striker is not necessarily keen on the idea of keeping an articulated offensive system in the same way as this season. A tactical debate which is not trivial for Mbappé, who has already made it known in the past that he did not appreciate evolving without an advent-center by his side. Not sure that Nasser Al-Khelaïfi listens to this advice, knowing that PSG has the possibility of keeping the one who is now often considered the best player in the history of football in his workforce at least until 2024, and that, that is priceless for the Qataris.
