Over, over, over: With the 24th case, Charly Hübner alias Alexander “Sascha” Bukow said goodbye to Rostock’s “Polizeiruf 110”. Until the end, the ARD had kept the details of his last minutes secret. Its end? One with tears. And the hope of seeing you again. Our author says hello.

It’s April 18, 2010: Borussia Dortmund can’t get beyond a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim. Chancellor Angela Merkel almost gets stuck in the ash rain from Eyjafjallajökull. Peter Alexander has stress with his lawyer. Mehrzad Marashi wins “DSDS”. And in Rostock, Katrin König (Anneke Kim Sarnau) and Alexander Bukow (Charly Hübner) take up service, “One of us” is the title of their first joint “Polizeiruf 110” episode. She is a profiler with razor-sharp thinking and an unusual balance of serenity and empathy, he is a somewhat battered meander with a penchant for plause, a big heart and a whole backpack full of private construction sites.

Bukow, or Sascha, as he is commonly known, is still married, lives with his wife and child, comes from the prefabricated building era, lives on currywurst and has an emotionally charged relationship with his father, a Rostock neighborhood boss with an opaque regime between boxing sheds , Pub and drug deals.

Over the next twelve years or so, we see all of this go down the drain. Bukow’s wife starts a relationship with a colleague from the station, followed by separation. Obscure entanglements in the deals of Sascha’s old man drag on through the years of service. The dark circles get deeper, the bulge over the belt slightly larger, the relationship with colleague König goes through all aggregate states from passive aggression to after-work drinking and drinking to friendship, sympathy and, in fact, love, which it may have been from the beginning.

The actually incompatible

The title of this first case becomes something like the Credo, on the basis of which an extremely intimate relationship with this unusually ordinary commissioner developed over the course of the decade: Bukow is just that, one of us. His hopes and struggles, his clumsiness as well as his pace, his dreams, low blows and consolation schnapps, that’s us. Considered less exaggerated, more from the point of view of the classic crime audience, reduced to a common denominator: Bukow brought together what was actually incompatible, and embodied the contradiction that constitutes the essence of life like no other TV commissioner: somehow we thought we knew him. At the same time, you never knew what to expect from him.

Except for love maybe, because that he would share more than just the office with the secret queen of his and our hearts, wasn’t it? The fact that the two recently had a fight breathed every contradiction again: The joy of a supposed happy ending. And the fear that it wouldn’t work out again after all. Half she fell, half he pulled her – suddenly there was even a marriage proposal here. Possibly the first between two detectives in German television history? You do not know exactly. Certainly the first one with bent sheet metal wire instead of two rings, and then both of them on their knees in front of each other. That was almost too good to be true, wasn’t it?

Tears, farewell, last look

Was it then, that was what the final quarter of an hour made clear. As ice cold, Hübner blew out the life of his opponent Subocek. Self defense? Definitely not. “We’re pulling ourselves deeper and deeper,” said the dismayed König, horrified by Bukow’s solo effort: “We shouldn’t go on.” Bukow had nothing to counter that, he, who as a 17-year-old wanted to be someone else, but doesn’t know how to do it: “I screwed it up.” Tears, parting, one last look. Over and out.

So it is now: Bye-Bye, Bukow. Anyway, the name. Not Bukow, with toneless W as in Flow or as in Wussow. No, Bukow. Like in Bukowski. And a bit like Fuck off. So let’s take it and say Farewell. And when our tears are dry, we eagerly await the new one to come. Lina Beckmann, Charly Hübner’s wife in real life, and that’s more than just a nice punchline in this story. Because Beckmann, who recently ripped the audience from their seats as “Richard III” at the place where Hübner is currently giving a standing ovation in Studio Braun’s “Coolhaze” – in the Hamburger Schauspielhaus – will suddenly become a new “Polizeiruf 110” – Open chapter.

Anyone who has ever seen Beckmann suspects what is in store for us: a kind of Olivia Colman at speed, an unbelievable actress, as deadly funny as she is deadly, with all the nuances between brittle and brutal.
