Several players of the national team of Ecuador were allegedly bribed to play the opening game of the World Cup 2022 against host country Qatar on purpose, reports Bahraini journalist Amjad Taha of the British Middle East Center for Studies and Research. This bribe is reportedly worth a total amount of 7.4 million dollars (7.1 million euros).
“The game should end 1-0, thanks to a goal after the break,” Taha writes Twitter. Five Qatari and Ecuadorian insiders have confirmed this. We hope, of course, that it turns out not to be true. We hope this revelation will influence the bribe. The world must stand up to FIFA’s corruption.’
It is the next scandal to come out about the controversial World Cup in Qatar. Earlier, senior FIFA officials were found to have taken bribes to organize the World Cup in the Asian country and 6,500 workers were found dead during the construction of the stadiums.
Qatar and Ecuador open the 2022 World Cup on Sunday at 5 p.m. Dutch time at the Al-Bayt Stadium. A day later, the Dutch national team plays against Senegal at the same time. The matches can be seen live at the NOS.
