Lucas Ocampos agreed with Alfred Schreuder last summer that he would play as a right winger at Ajax. The Argentinian winger tells that in conversation with the Ajax Life Magazine. Ocampos has been rented from Seville since last summer, but his adventure in Amsterdam has been disappointing so far. It even seems that he is short term will return to Spain.
Ocampos spoke to Schreuder last summer and after that conversation he had a good feeling about the switch to Ajax. “We agreed that I would play as a right winger, but things didn’t turn out the way they should have. But hey, I’m a professional. I’m not whining about it. This is also part of it.’ The Argentinian says that he is two-legged and can play both left and right wingers. “It depends on the opponent and what the trainer wants with me.”
The system at Ajax is different than at Sevilla and that is why it takes some getting used to for Ocampos. ‘Seville plays 4-3-3 but with two controlling midfielders. The wingers at Sevilla remain wingers, at Ajax we play with emerging backs.’ However, the winger does not find that difficult, because he already has experience with it. ‘I also played like that in Italy (Ocampos played for Genoa and AC Milan, ed.).’
“If we ever get a football son, it is best for him to come and play in the Ajax training”
Schreuder was secretive about a possible role for Ocampos during a press conference at the beginning of this season. The Ajax coach wanted to find another position for the Argentinian. Will Ocampos be retrained as right back? ‘I’m 28, I’ve played a lot as a striker in major competitions. To play as a right back now…’ Would he be open to it? The right-back position? Maybe we should give it a try, haha.’
At Ajax, Ocampos has been well received by his fellow players. It also helps that there are quite a few Spanish-speaking players in Amsterdam. ‘The Ajax culture, with a clear playing style from young to old, is great. I talked about that with my wife: if we ever get a football son, it would be best for him to come and play in the Ajax academy.’
