Rubbish collection at a run for the handball players of the Green Team USAM and the young people of the sports clubs of Nimois for the 1st edition of the “Plogging”.
“Cigarette!”, we hear shouting two or three times a minute. A very proud little girl then approaches the garbage bag that is handed to her to drop the picked-up cigarette end into it with her pliers. Efficient !
On the other hand, for an eco-solidarity jogging that intends to mix sports activity and ecological action, it does not run a lot! The word plogging, however, predicts it well: it is the contraction of the Swedish formula plocka upp (to pick up) and the English jogging (running). But it’s the action that counts: “We want to raise awareness of selective collection and the waste treatment process on our side”, explains Thierry Momin of the company Océan, which collects waste in the city of Nîmes.
“So of course, thanks to our partner, Nîmes is already a very clean city, we don’t expect to pick up a lot of waste, but it was important to create a bit of a buzz this year to be able to bring plogging into other districts which would need it more on the next editions”, reacts David Tebib, president of the USAM, organizer of the event.
Most of the Green Team players are present to accompany the approximately 200 supporters who have come to hunt for waste in the city. For this 1st edition, the USAM offered three routes to ploggers to cover the widest possible area: starting from the Jardins de la Fontaine grove, some left in the direction of the Magne tower, others towards the Jean Jaurès , and the last towards the arenas… At the step, then!
Before leaving, the participants equip themselves with tongs and colored bags dedicated to each type of garbage (it was also not initially very clear which color corresponded to what). Then it remains only to pick up. In the absence of large waste, the streets were not short of cigarette butts. “Cigarette!” we shout again.
